Bare rooted stock has been cultivated in open ground and it has had the roots repeatedly pruned to develop a root ball.
Container Stock
Seedlings grown in potting mix in plastic bags or containers will suffer less transplant shock but are more expensive to purchase. A similar method as for bare rooted stock may be used to plant container stock if the root plug is small enough otherwise a wider hole will be needed.
Unrooted Stock
Only a few plants will grow from branch cuttings planted directly into the ground.
Cuttings such as poplar stakes can be placed in holes made with a crowbar equal in depth to half the length of the stake.
Direct Seeding
Seed can be sown directly on to the site such as grass/legume mixes, but also tree species including manuka and Tagasate. Seed such as manuka may be sown by laying the site with manuka branches bearing ripe seed capsules. The seed may require treating prior to sowing. To be successful direct seeding requires good soil, adequate moisture and a lack of weed competition.
