Outside Rotorua Lakes' Catchments
Advanced wastewater treatment

In many places outside the Rotorua Lakes' catchments new conventional septic tank systems will continue to be permitted, provided that the conditions of rule 3 of the On-site Effluent Treatment Regional Plan are met.

If you want to install an advanced system rule 12 of the On-site Effluent Treatment Regional Plan applies.

On-site Effluent Treatment Regional Plan

A list of advanced systems able to meet the effluent quality requirements of rule 12(f)  is available here:

Advanced Wastewater System Supplier List - Rule 12: Outside Rotorua Lakes' catchments(10KB, PDF)

NB Environment Bay of Plenty carried out no testing or verification of manufacturers claims for most of these systems.

While the Rotorua wastewater trial is  primarily to determine which systems can be installed in the Rotorua catchments the information is also useful for comparing systems for elsewhere in the Bay of Plenty.  Trial results are available at Rotorua Lakes' catchments page.

A wastewater system needs to be installed in a manner consistent with rule 12 of the On-site Effluent Treatment Regional Plan to be a permitted activity.
