Kaituna / Maketu Management Strategy

View of Kaituna River and the Maketu Estuary from the air

The future is looking brighter for the Kaituna River and Maketu Estuary. Why? Because the community has joined forces with local and regional agencies to find ways to look after these waterways better.

Over the next year, a working group, will develop a draft management strategy for the river and estuary. It will not be a statutory document but it will be a guide for any future decision-making. It’s important that it’s done – and that it’s done well. The strategy will also have specific actions in it to improve environmental quality of the Kaituna River and Maketu Estuary.

Environment Bay of Plenty is funding the work, which is a joint project with Western Bay of Plenty District Council, Tauranga City Council and Rotorua District Council.

The Strategy covers from the Okere Falls to the mouth of the Kaituna River, the Maketu Estuary, and the catchment area.  The Rotorua Lakes is already covered by the Strategy for the Lakes of the Rotorua District. The purpose statement approved by the working party is to maintain the cultural values, achieve long term sustainable management and improved environmental quality of the Kaituna River, its related waterways and catchment, and the Maketu Estuary.
